Electric power chairs are manufactured either with belts or gears

Posted on: September 15, 2011

Over time as more and more people have needed wheelchairs, the idea has really developed to provide a much better facility for people with mobility needs. This is when the introduction of electric wheelchairs was made to accommodate for the needs to elder people who struggle to use manual wheelchairs. However when this transition was made relating to powered wheelchairs, with any newly developed product it was over priced and also had reliability issues. Therefore even though the option of electric wheelchair was made available not many could afford it.

Electric power chairs are manufactured either with belts or gears and at time they are made using both options. Wheelchairs are just like any other mechanical vehicle and need to be taken care of in a similar manner. So their brakes, tyres and etc need to be regularly checked and replaced as and when needed. They also need to be serviced regularly as any car would need to be serviced. So there is a running cost involved in owing an electric wheel chair. But in most cases the costs are fairly reasonable and affordable. But to ensure that you are not landed with a heavy repair bill it is essential that you service you mobility wheelchair as when is recommended by the manufacturer.

Lightweight Wheelchairs are usually built around a ridged structure which cannot be folded. Even though this does mean that the vehicle does take up a lot of storage space, but the same time you have the assurance that your wheelchair is made using a solid structure. The other reason why most wheel chairs are made of a solid structure is that they need to carry the battery, heavy duty wheels and a control system which can be difficult to integrate into a foldable wheelchair.

As technology progress lighter materials are used to manufacture wheelchairs so they become more efficient in their use of electricity, giving the user more time between charges to use their scooter. Even the controls are being made more specifically and a minimalist approach is being used to reduce the number of controls, giving the user just one joy stick from where they can control almost if not all features of their wheelchair.

The battery used for these types of wheelchairs is similar to that of a battery used in a car. These batteries have great endurance and can last for hours between charging. However they are heavy and do take up a lot of space if the wheelchair. But these batteries cover the main aspect of providing long times between charges and even put on charge they recharge at a fairly quick speed allowing the user to get back on the move within very short times periods of charging.

So all in all electric wheel chairs do weigh more that manual wheel chairs but the advantages that they offer to the user are immense and the heavy weight of these wheelchairs is easily compensated by the users due to the other comforts that are offered by these electric wheel chairs.
